Idea 1
Making a music video that tells a story. Tom playing a guitar, wearing his own casual clothing and potentially being at a home environment, open spaces or countryside. Maybe skipping stones or something in deep thought. This idea is what I immediately imagined when the theme of the song came into mind. Because Tom's music is more country-like and slow because it is in the folk genre, the countryside and cottage or beach with open spaces would be the perfect location for the theme of love and heartbreak. It shows the character deep in thought. It also matches the casual denim clothing that Tom usually wears.
Strengths - The strengths of this idea of it being based in this area, I think really fits the whole nature of Tom and his music. It will make the music video original to Tom and it will just fit Tom's style and theme of the song.
Weaknesses - The weaknesses of making the music video like this is not having the location to film it in. Not being able to have a cabin or a quiet beach, open spaces to film may be hard or require money for a private hire. The weather may also not be as intended, meaning we cannot film on that day.
Opportunities - The opportunities that this music video will give our client, is the opportunity to have a music video that s original, different and presents Tom's unique style. It shows his audience the type of artist he is and the professionalism will peak the interest of others in the industry who may want to partner with Tom.
Threats - The threats that this idea may give us is if the music video does not turn out as planned. For example, we may have to pay for some of the land that we want to use for filming, the video may end up not looking as planned due to not having enough time to get all the shots needed or the location may be too windy or rainy so we cannot film everything that needs to be filmed.
My team members and client came to the conclusion that this idea was suitable but could potentially be enhanced a little further. Our client thought that this idea was suitable and matched his style very well although he thought it could be even better. Therefore, I decided to come up with another two ideas that we could maybe mash together.
Idea 2
For my second initial idea, I was thinking that we could add some sort of visual effects motion graphics to the music video. Like in Bruno Mars's music video; "Thats What I Like", the visuals are of him singing and dancing to the song while motion graphics around him to emphasise the dance moves. The graphic images also portray the meaning of the music video for example, a car.
Strengths - The strengths of this music video would be how entertaining it is. It would look visually stunning and the audience would have a better understanding of the song due to their being graphics that they can see and link to the lyrics.
Weaknesses - The weaknesses of this music video is how I do not feel anymore that it really connects with the artist. When I told my team members about this idea, they also felt that it did not really connect to the artist or the type of song we were working with. The motion graphics like Bruno Mars's song, fits more towards a pop or upbeat song rather than folk music. Motion graphics will also be copying the artist Bruno Mars so it will not be original to Tom.
Opportunities - The opportunities that this idea would have given our client, is the opportunity to experience something different. Have a different type of video on his channel and to have the opportunity to be involves in motion graphics which is what the industry likes.
Threats - The threats that this music video would have given the client is the threat of losing his fans. The threat of Tom not being original or sticking to his style and taking someone else's style. His audience may not like this new copied style and will dislike the video. This is what we do not want for our client. We want the video to be a success and for his audience to like it.
I told my team members and client this idea and we all came to the conclusion that this idea was not suitable as it would not do the client a favour. Instead it would disturb his style and the audience would not like it.
Idea 3 - Final idea
The final idea is what our client came up with which was taken from my first initial idea of having a story behind the music video. Our client decided to keep the idea of having open spaces, a natural environment and casual clothing like in the first idea, except he wants a walking concept. He has chosen for us to film at Botany Bay and he has sent us the music video:
Strengths - The strength of having this idea as a final outcome would be that our client will have a professional looking music video that is unique to him. This would have been done before but not in the unique style of Tom. His unique, casual retro vibe clothing goes nicely with the open spaces locations. It gives him space to be dramatic and be emotional and think about his lyrics. In a music video, this will give dramatic meaning to the song.
Weaknesses - The weaknesses of doing this for the music video will be finding the location. Some places we would have to hire out which costs money so we may struggle to find open spaces to shoot. Unless we go to a nice woodlands area and shoot but this may not work as well with the vibe of the video.
Opportunities - The opportunities that this idea would give the client is the originality of the music video that the client wants. The song is all about realistic and sad experiences with a partner you was with that sadly come to an end. The music video being set in this type of open spaced area is realistic like the video because the close up and focus on the artists face with potential lights and houses in the backgrounds shows he is on top of the world for a moment while he has something to say.
Threats - The threats of this would be the time, place and weather. The weather conditions may not be quite right to shoot the video and the video idea would also take longer than the other ideas due to plenty of shots.
Final idea analysis
The final idea shown above has been approved by our client; Tom. He really likes the idea and wishes to do it. We could not find anywhere with big open spaces but instead he has chosen the location: Botany Bay in Broadstairs to film at. He has also added to this idea. He decided that he wants a group of extras that he is going to provide and he wants them to come up and go away a few times throughout the video as if he is walking along a timeline. The music video is all about getting over a girl and hopefully doing better next year. He shows his struggles as time goes on and as he is trying to heal from the break up.
The influences of this idea was from the music video '27' by Passengers. He really liked the one shot type of vibe to the video and he loved how he just walks from scene to scene as life is passing him by. Me and Adam loved the idea when he Skyped us about it and couldn't wait to try it out. Tom had already made a quick plan and schedule for us on the day.
