Why is Instagram such a popular social media platform for businesses?
In my opinion, these are the reasons I feel that Instagram is so popular:
Instagram allows you to upload short videos and more than one photo. It can be cropped to a square or it can be the normal phone ratio size.
Instagram allows you to create a business account like I have where you can connect your other social medias, your email and business number to it for commissions or clientele.
You are able to upload your company or business logo as your profile picture
You are able to add filters and edit your photos and images to enhance them however you want in the app itself
You are able to add captions to your posts to show your products, business or lifestyle to make the post relevant.
You are able to include hashtags on your posts so that other social media business accounts and private accounts can find your page easily through other tags and hashtags
You are able to share, like and comment on posts. You can also see how many times your video has been viewed to show its popularity
You can create boomerangs and stories on your page to show what events, bootfairs, stalls and things you are getting up to so your clients can follow along and know where to find you next
You are able to directly message the business incase of any enquiries or commissions
You can see how many people visited the page recently, you can promote your page, bookmark the page and certain posts and see how many people the page and posts has reached out to so I can see what my target audience is most interested in
Finally, you are able to tag team members in your posts that you collaborated with
"Through careful selection, brands and their marketing agencies hand-pick social media’s most successful accounts and pay them to promote their products in a more subtle way than advertisements and boosted social media posts. More specifically, brands pay influencers to post photos with their products, so that the post doesn’t appear as a sponsored ad in followers’ feeds, but rather, as a less obvious, more natural-looking advertisement."
This quote suggests that Instagram is great for businesses and advertising as it is much more natural rather than make a video trailer dedicated to that one advertisement where people may get bored and want to skip it. The advertisements are talked about YouTuber's who have plenty of followers anyway meaning people would want to listen to them talking about the product. This means that the advertisement for a certain brand, company or product will have an influx of new clientele because some YouTuber's have gave it a good review and their viewers may want to try it out.
Instagram's background
Instagram was launched on the 6th October 2010. It started out with 25,000 users on the first day. "Instagram hit one million users in three months."
It was clear to see that Instagram was going to be a success as soon as it was launched. Justin Bieber and other big stars starting signing up for Instagram and with word of mouth of these stars signing up for it, it didn't take long until other users started signing up to follow and watch the stars. Instagram became popular because of how original it is compared to other social medias. It allowed people to get creative, to edit their photos, to show whats going on in their life, to get creative with their page and create their own theme with their photos, advertise and promote their businesses such as Lush and finally, show your talents and skills to the world. Instagram is a much more professional way to showcase a business as it is so popular and allows you to do so many things. This is the reason why I have chosen to use this social media platform for my own bath bomb business.
Lush Instagram Inspiration
The image shown above was my very first inspiration which is Lush. Lush is my main inspiration for the business due to the creativity, success and professionalism that the company has. Their page looks unique, colourful, fun and trust worthy which is what I want to show with my Instagram page also.
What I like about this image is the location. Most of the photos I have taken are with a white background with no shadows to look completely professional on the site. On the website I have made, I need the images to be with a white background so the client can click on the product they like the look of not for the location of the photo. However, having good quality photographs with a location that shows how professional, trust worthy and natural these products are, will make the image so much more attractive which will intrigue my clientele on social media.
This video from Instagram shows the product in use. It shows the colours of the product, how the product fizzes and reacts to water and also how long it lasts. This will intrigue customers as they can see how it works and that it it actually does what it says it should, rather than it being cheap and not fizzing or exploding with colour. From these videos on the Instagram, I have decided to also create short videos with multiple cameras to capture close ups, mid shots and pans of the water and bath bombs. I will also create short trailers and maybe slow motion videos to show the action.
Lush also uploads different events and talks that the co-founders attend to. This is important to show on Instagram as it gives the impression to new clients that they are professional, they are trust worthy, the products are what they say they are and the high price is worth paying.
I may take professional looking images of my boofair stalls to put on Instagram.
The image shown on the right shows a mid shot of one of the bath bombs exploding. You can see how it dissolves and how the colour fizzes out. It is attractive and very intriguing.
I really like the image shown below because of how the bubbles and colour is the main focus compared to the solid colour of the rest of the water. It really stands out and attracts my attention when scrolling down the page.
Having this image on the Instagram page, it shows that the products are animal tested, they are homemade and they are natural. It makes clients more likely to buy the products as they will feel safe and trusted which is worth paying the price for. They will feel like the products are genuine and they know the products will do exactly what they say they are going to do.
The image on the right shows one of the lush workers at work in the factory. With the jacket he is wearing, makes him look busy and happy in his workplace. He also looks like he knows what he is doing which is again trust worthy, and makes us more interested into what he is doing and the ethics behind it.
This image is a poster showing the dates and times of an event that the company is upholding. I took inspiration from this as I could also do something like this for the upcoming bootfairs that me and my mum attend. If I make them professional looking like this then the clients will know exactly where we are going to be.
The Body Shop Instagram Inspiration
The Body Shop is a big inspiration for me because of how all of their products are also natural, homemade and non-animal tested. The Body Shop is successful worldwide and does plenty of health and beauty products similar to my own business. I also love their photography and graphic images on their social media which means I can be greatly inspired. The image shown on the left inspires me because of the amount of object in the frame. Instead of just having one object, there are plenty of objects relevant to the product. For example, the rose which is the scent of the product and the wood that the product is sitting on. The wood makes the product look natural and homemade and just sets the image as a neutral colour.
I like the background and objects in the frame with this image. I like how the main product is in the centre of the image with the scent of what the product is surrounding the product. In this case their is rose petals and strawberries to match the colour and scent of the product scattered around the product. I also like how the background is blue rather than white as it just sets the image and makes it look more creative. Finally, I like how they have combined two different scents of the product into one image by halving it down the middle and matching each product up but with a different scent and background to show the different variations of this one product. This may be also something I want to try and experiment with in the future.
I like how creative and co-ordinated this image is. Instead of having a flat background image with one product in the middle which is pretty boring, They have taken a picture of a iPhone taking a picture. This is creative and stylish and grabs the attention of clientele. the white wall sets the neutral colours of the image and the browns, pinks and oranges collide really nicely. The beige blanket is again neutral and sets the eye for the popping orange and pink colours. The roses also gives the image a main eye popping colour as a main focus while also suggesting scent.
This image works well due to the colours matching each other on the colour wheel. The oranges, greens, yellow allows us to suggest the scents of the products. It makes us feel like we can already smell the mangos, the oranges and the lemon scents as seen in the picture. The image is eye popping, I like also how there is items in the background which are blurred, it feels up the image nicely.
I like the similar colours in this image also. I like how similar the pinks, whites, salmon and red go together. The red is the most vibrant colour which makes the products pop and stand out from the background, as well as having the strawberries and a splash of each product on the side. Because the colours are very similar, it makes us know the scent exactly without actually being there.
This poster on the Instagram inspires me because of how the colours, the font, the logo and layout of the products match each other. The word new is in the sae colour as the product lid, the white writing stands out from the grey background and also matches the colour of the product and the product lid, the font being bold matches the soapy beauty feel of the product and it also fills the page. It looks professional and trust worthy as a company while it also looks simple and satisfying. This will intrigue an audience as the poster makes the company look successful and genuine due to it filling the page and matching in every way.
What really sets this image for me is the colours and the wooded background. I have already taken many images just with a white background for standard website images for when clients buy online but, having images like these for the social media, for backgrounds, posters and banners are much more intriguing as there is more to look at rather than standard images with a white background. The pinks and whites and blacks match making us drawn into the centre of the image where the product is glittery and gold.
This image is intriguing because of how the water droplets around the product make the product seem moist. After cleansing and using these products, you want your body feeling moisturised like your skin can breathe rather than your skin feeling dirty or like your skin paws have been clogged up.
I like how fun and fascinating this image is due to the little coloured monsters matching the scents of each product. Each monster is also holding something similar to the scent for example coconut or strawberries. It makes the image look fun and colourful.
These images shown above were found on the The Body Shop Instagram page, looking at them as a whole, they all match in some way or another. They all use natural, beige colours, they all look homemade and natural due to having leaves or minerals in the background of the images and they all have wood, soap or a plain background material showing that they are natural. This is very eye catching and soothing to the eye as it makes us think how natural and soothing the product is by not being animal-tested or having harmful chemicals in.
These images look very pleasing to the eye. I like how the product on the bottom right hand side, is dripping over the product casing. It is creative and looks very pleasing. Secondly, the imagine in the middle at the very bottom is one of my favourite images. This is my favourite image because of the lighting and how the editing has made the colours pop. The blue colours really compliment the greens which again looks natural because of the leaves and the pop of colour. Aside from this, I really like the highlight as seen on the product bottle, it makes it really eye catching due to being extremely bright from the lights that were used in the studio. Again, I love the swatches of product that The Body Shop always do so you can see a clump of the product not just in the product packaging.
One other thing I love about The Body Shop again, is how they show you how to use the products with various photos and videos. Even step to step videos of how to apply certain things for best results.
Comparing The Body Shop's Instagram to Lush's Instagram, I think Lush tries very hard to try and
Beauty Bay Instagram Inspirations
Beauty Bay sells more cosmetic makeup brushes and items rather than health care products. I am mainly looking at their Instagram page to see how they have photographed and captured their products as they also are a successful company.
Firstly, I love how the company has made before and after photographs where the model is in the exact same position with the same background. This is pleasing to the eye as we can see clear before and after results.
Relating this to my business, some of my products when I used them to film, I found that they make your skin really nice moisturised and smooth especially the anti-stress potions in the bath. I think showing a before and after image on social media or even on the website, would be super useful to show how genuine the products are and the results that they give in the bath.
With this image, I really like the layout of the products. I like how they fill the whole frame and I like how they are leaning against each other to lead the eye from one product to another.
I think the main factor I have learnt from my Instagram Inspirations is the layout of the products is essential as you want to be creative but at the same time, you want to show some kind of symmetry so it will look pleasing to the eye. You also want to think about location and background. Having a white background when the label on the products are white, is a little distracting as you want the products to pop and stand out rather than blend in with the background in my opinion. I would use a natural background like a wooden bench or add in a few leaves or minerals just to give the photo a little texture and definition.
With this photo, again the layout of the products leading to the main product and the location is essential. This is what has made this photo what it is. Sometimes if you are selling products on a website, you want the background to be plain white and you don't want other products distracting the main products as you just want the main product and different angles and thats it so you can see exactly what you are buying. Otherwise the audience may get confused about what is including in the parcel and what is not. Images like this would look great as images on social media or images with writing like posters would look great around my boot fair stalls as the images are far more attractive with different locations. Lastly, I think colour co-ordinating the products and the location is also key as you do not want any colours in the foreground or background to clash as that is very off putting for any type of audience. This is key to getting a really nice attractive looking image.
As you can see with this image shown above, the sandy beach is the same type of tones as the colours in the pallet. The peachy shells on the edge of the pallet with the beige brush, also compliments the colours really nicely.
I really like how the background to this image is black. It matches the browns and dark beiges in the pallet while allowing the lighter, more glittery shades to really make the pallet and the image pop. Looking at this image compared to the images at the bottom, the black background definitely works better with the colours in the pallet.
These images with a white background are the same pallet as the one above but these are the images shown on the Beauty Bay website not on the Instagram. Seeing how the images compare, I really like the angles of the images so you can really see the colours and shades up close. I think the angles are creative and the overall images looks really professional, I think the photos are using really nice soft boxes to light the product and it works extremely well. The product is definitely brighter and is using better lighting on the photos on the website however, I do really like how the black background compliments the colour in the pallet on Instagram. Although it is not necessarily about creative background colours for the website as it is all about the product only as you want it to stand out for it to be seen easily.
Again, this is a really nice angle, I like how the focus point is in the centre so that the image has some depth of field, The white background definitely gives the pallet edge and makes it stand out.
This relates to my business because I am finding inspirations of how different cosmetic products are photographed, laid out, what environments and background are used for website selling purposes and social media. It has helped me developed my knowledge a lot as I have been able to take professional and creative photographs to advertise and sell the products in my business.
These are two more photographs of the same pallet. Having different angles and images of the same product I think is a good thing as the client gets a real feel for what the product looks like from all angles.
Again with this image, layout is key. This is on Instagram and because the images are for Instagram, the images do not have to look as plain and boring as they are on the website because people wont get confused what is for sale and what isn't. The idea is to make it as creative yet professional and trust worthy as possible as a advertisement for the website and business.
This layout is creative yet professional, it does not look childish or out of place, it is pleasing to the eye.
This image at the top is really nice because of the background. I love the printed 20% off wallpaper with the same colour outline as the other half of the background. This is creative and professional looking and it really makes the laid out products in the centre look attractive.
Having swatches of the products is another good idea as it shows you the product in use and on skin. This is the same with my bath bombs. People would want to see them in water and in use maybe with a model rather than just pictures of what they look like.
This image looks a lot more professional and pleasing than the one above. I do not like the layout of the products in the centre as I think it looks a lot less professional rather than having the products spaced across the page with swatches of the product rather than having them all clumped together in the centre. This image on the left looks pleasing because it is covered in bubbles and the hand separates the colour of the white bubbles and the white product.
I like the layout of these products as it fills the frame and it matches the nude colours. The light beige background matches the nude shade foundations, the lighter nudes and the slightly darker nudes too. The colours look very pleasing and go well together.
I like how the layout is made out to look a little mess although we can also see that is is an organised mess that was set on purpose due to the pattern of having one foundation sticking out on the left and then the next one sticking out on the right.
This image is organised really well. I like the black background and how it blends with the black casings of the products and I like how the lights make the black floor a little lighter. The lighting makes the lighter colour and pallets pop and the organisation is very creative as we wonder how the products are still standing up.
I like the organisation of these products as it allows you to see the different shades in the pallets and the packaging also which makes the products look professional.
I like the background that the products are sitting on because it is glittery and shiny just like the handles of the brushes. It matches very well. The brushes stand out because of the mermaid like colours added into the handle and brush ends which stands out from the plain silver table.
I also like the depth of field in this image which is clearly the centre line of the image.
I personally believe out of the three different Instagrams I have analysed so far, I prefer the images of The Body Shop's Instagram page. This is because I love how they organise their products, I love the popping colours and I love how they match the ingredients and swatches of the product with the main product in the centre. For example, having strawberries around the product that is red and strawberry scented.
Nona Bath Bomb Instagram Inspirations
Nona Bath Bombs is a small business on Instagram that I found who is just starting out. They are not based in England but I thought it would be interesting to try and identify the factors of their Instagram page that are not professional or successful and see why this is. Compared to other companies like Lush.
I really like this image because it shows the after effects of the bath bomb in use. However, the image would have been better if they did a close up of one of the petals, made the image more centred instead of seeing half of the bath tub which is not relevant and maybe added a image of the bath bomb or product that is in the tub. This is what they could have maybe improved in my opinion.
This is another one of their images on their Instagram page, I also really like this image, I like this image more than the one above as they have a product in the foreground in focus and other bath bombs in the background slightly blurry so it has depth of field. I like how the women is handling the bath bomb in the picture also. To improve, I think they could have used a better background maybe one solid colour matching the colour of the bath bombs, maybe a light pink? or they could have a nice natural environment, for example outside with grass and minerals or a bench which is a neutral colour.
I really like the packaging bags that the bath bombs come in and I also like the bath bombs, I think this image is a big let down on the Instagram page though. The image is not totally in focus, the bag is not centred or facing directly to the camera, the bath bombs are facing different directions and you cant necessarily see them clearly in the packaging, they have not thought about the background or location, it is just on what looks like a kitchen side and finally, the bath bombs at the bottom are half cut off by the image. It looks like the image was taken very quick and not much thought went into it. Because of these factors, the company does not look professional or trust worthy so I would immediately lose interest.
This research is relevant to my business as these photos and factors on this Instagram page, is what I am learning to stay away from compared to successful and professional companies like The Body Shop or Lush.
These next images show some really nice bath bombs also however, it does not look professional again. Instead of professional images showing off the bath bombs, it looks like someone has bought the bath bombs and are having them for their own use rather than a company selling them. The lighting is off as it is a little too dark, the images are not organised and having the hand holding the bath bomb is good but not for every image, I want to see a professional image of what the bath bomb looks like instead of being distracted by someones hand.
Again with this image, not enough time has been taken to take these pictures. The heart is off and has fallen over, it does not look totally in focus, their are objects and dark circles in the background. The image is also at a tilt which is a little disturbing for a business trying to sell these products.
With these images here, they are also not professional or thought out but most of all, we see that they have been taken on Snapchat and have just been uploaded to Instagram. There is unwanted text on them that has not been designed or thought out and the Snapchat text box is on the image also. As you can see, there is only 28 likes on the picture below suggesting these are bad images which lets down the company. They would definitely not intrigue me into buying the products because of the lack of quality photographs that do not grab my attention. I would rather pay the extra money and buy products from Lush.
Facebook Inspirations
Why is Facebook such a popular social media branch for businesses?
Facebook has been around for a very long while and is popular anyway so having your own business promoted on it, it will be guaranteed to be seen by a lot of people

You can use your own business logo as your profile photo
"You can share updates, photos, videos, promotions and a lot more" - https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/5453-how-to-promote-your-small-business-on-facebook.html

You are able to like the posts, turn on notifications and follow the page

When a fan interacts with the page, they will see the new activity feed on their Facebook
"Facebook also offers traditional advertising options that let you position your custom ads in users’ news feeds. The ads appear as promotional posts and direct anyone who clicks straight to your website. Because Facebook collects heaps of user data, it can target your advertisement to users who are most likely to be interested in your product or service. The platform also features an analytics tool to help you understand which ads drive interest and sales." - https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/5453-how-to-promote-your-small-business-on-facebook.html
The reason for deciding to use Facebook as one of my business social medias, is because Facebook is so popular and wildly used, not everyone uses Instagram but they do use Facebook. Meaning I can put the business Facebook on my business cards and new clients are able to get in touch, see our nee products and discounts or offers and either click and collect or get the products delivered.
Facebook Inspiration Pages - Bath and Body Works
Bath and Body Works is a very well known, successful company that mainly uses their Facebook business page as promotion for their products. You are able to buy products, enter enquires and see all new products and discounts that the business offers. I am researching this page to see how they have set our their page, what they upload, how they have taken their photos and I am going to gain inspiration for when I create my Facebook inspiration page.
Here are some of the comments and the ratings left by recent customers who have bought from this company. As you can see, it is all positive feedback and comments and their have been a lot of reviews so to have a 4 and a half star rating after 535,348 ratings, means that the feedback is mostly all positive.
As you can see by the comments above, most of the comments are very positive and Bath and Body Works always replies whether it is negative, positive or any enquiries. The company is very polite and always in touch or happy to help which is a bonus.
This is one of the company's recent posts, even though it is not bath bombs and similar products to what I am selling, I like the amount of colour they have in their images, I love the layout and how the main product is in focus, I love the lighting and location.
Comparing these pictures on this Facebook page to the Instagram images on the Nona's business page, we can definitely tell who's company is the most professional due to the images and the editing of the images. It makes all the difference.
I like this image because it looks professional. I think maybe a baby blue of some sort would have looked better as a background as it would match the product. Maybe even a shiny gold to match the text on the product, rather than just a random colour. The shiny gold colour as a background would go well as it will convey the theme of under the ocean and mermaids even more.
This image conveys the theme of mothers day with the nice yellow, pink and white girly colours that also fit the time of year. I love the natural bright lighting to set the theme of the image, I love the yellow and pink flowers in the background, I like the ribbon tracing around the products and how the wooden floor sets the sunny, beachy vibe of the products.
I like the type of pictures that this company uploads as it shows all their products, their themed products and deals or sets.
This image here shows the same theme of pinks and salmons for mothers day as these are seen to be girly colours. The organisation is yet again there, the lighting, the layout and the colours are again all in place making it look professional.
These are two short videos that the company has uploaded on Facebook, they are nothing too fancy or special but with their little motion graphics and stop motion, the video suddenly draws attention and becomes very interesting. The video is not too long or over complicated but it just sets the company's expectations that little bit higher. It makes them seem trust worthy and professional in order to be able to do this and have lovely organised images. The time and effort has clearly been put in making the business fully functioning and not just a hobby.
The image shown above is one of my favourite images because of how the light reflects through the bottle and creates reflections. The lighting is natural and the location suits the products. The products feel right at home in the bathroom they are places in and the other products such as towels, sets the scene.
Same with this image, the yellow bath petals matches the yellow bottle and the white bubbles matches the white bottle. Even the tea fits in as the yellow tea matches the yellow bottle and natural brown colours. I like how you can only see half of the tea as it is not so necessary it just gives colour and edge to the image.
The image shown above and below are very similar due to the fact that the brown and green colour schemes are nearly the same, giving off the same sort of vibe. You can see the product labels and font easily and the striking colour and layout makes the images so much more attractive. This is what I will be experimenting more with on my photo shoots, is the colour, the organisation and the layout.
I have not wrote about the images above in too much depth as they are all pretty much the same just have different colour layout with different products, they have different colour schemes and locations to fit each of the products in with the scene. If I was to do another photo shoot, I would think more about doing different locations and having different props and colour schemes for social media as the plain white background was only for the website.
Lush Facebook Inspiration
Lush currently has a 4.5 star rating with 2,774 ratings in total. The comments are mostly all positive and enthusiastic. The only negative comments I have seen is about the high price that the company charges.
Lush's Instagram is very different compared to their Instagram. Their Facebook is more about the events and talks they attend to and how they are doing good and saving the planet. It is not too much photography work although they do upload that too.
The image on the left and the image below shows just two f the many posters Lush have made to advertise their events and festivals they attend. I notice that Lush tend to post a lot of these when creating events
Even though the Lush Facebook mainly shows you the different collaborations they are partnering with, the ethics and the vents they attend, I decided to include some of the photography that they have on Facebook because that relates more to my business. For my Facebook business page, I may make posters and advertisements of the bootfair stalls I am going to attend, but I am mainly going to showcase the photography to show offers, sets, gifts and new products available to mainly advertise and make everything look glamourous.
These are the sort of images I wish to take for my social media as they are so much more intriguing than the plain images for the website.
These two photos shown here are more of what Lush uploads on Facebook showing the different activities they host and take part in.
Beauty Bay's Facebook Page
This is an advertisement that Beauty Bay has made to entice new clientele into buying products with discount off. This makes clientele extremely excited because their products are expensive as they are high end products.
Compared to Beauty Bay's Instagram, their Facebook is much more factual to show their events, meetings, talks and more. There are photography images on their Facebook but it is mainly showing the different events and festivals that they are attended so their fans do not miss out. Such as giveaways and prize draws that they have added to their notes on their Facebook page.
This image shown on the left shows the product in use and what it looks like on skin which is very useful for those whom are considering buying the pallet as. Some pallets may look really good in the image but people will not be sold on it unless they see it working and in use so they know just how nice the pallet is on skin.
This can be the same with any business, showing a product in use with other photos and videos is always a very good idea.
Here is a photo of another product that the company is selling, they have uploaded this to show that they are having discounts on this product for the holiday season which is super useful as it will intrigue young teens as they do not have much money.
Having multiple links to their website where you can buy items is always useful as it makes it more quick, easy and timeless for their fans and clients.
The text for this image is explaining to the audience what the product is and how it is used which you can also see in big and bold on the front of the product. It also tells you what the product may also be good for. For example travel use as the product is fairly small.
This image shows the after effects of the products she has bought from the site. The image intrigues young women as they may want to look as good as the model and the text to go with the image, intrigues young people whom wear makeup a lot to buy products from Beauty Bay for special occasions like Coachella. It is the perfect makeover.
To summarise, Instagram is a lot more photography based to glamorise the products, grouping the products and advertising sets. Facebook usually showcases the events that the business or company attends or upholds, it gives the customers news, updates, new products and other information. Facebook usually shows before and after images to intrigue the audience to go and buy from the website. Instagram showcases all of the products in all different sets with multiple videos.
Twitter does not usually upload any pictures or videos, Twitter pages usually just talk about updates, new products coming soon and events. Therefore Twitter would be no good for my business as the images and videos is what sells the business. Facebook and Instagram is much more suited to me due to the young target audience being most active on these social media where they will see the product images and instantly be intrigued.
Elvis Communication Research
I looked at this company, to see how they advertised for businesses.
I found there work interesting and noticed good colour schemes, the use of different images for different businesses, for example some businesses adverts were bold and minimal in text and design yet others seem to be quite busy, not grasping exactly what was being advertised.
I failed to see a link in there work but came to the conclusion that what promotes one business doesn't appeal to another depending on the business and what its advertising or promoting.
I really like this advertisement due to the text, images and colour linking although it is not clear what it is advertising exactly.
